| Martin and Sarah with unidentified grandchild |
|
It took a while to track this family to Yorkshire. Eston is now a suburb of Middlesborough but at the time it was a rapidly growing town for a massive population of migrant miners at one end of the Cleveland iron ore seam. On their marriage certificate Martin is described as an engineer and both he and Sarah are said to reside at Tees Tilery which was a district rather than an establishment. Details of Sarah's family have been thoroughly researched by Catherine Ingham who is descended from one of Sarah's siblings and is therefore a distant cousin of mine. I wouldn't presume to repeat her research here but will add some further details. Sarah was christened 12 April 1837 at St. James the Less, Ashted, Warwickshire. At the time her father, John Heaney (1811-1881), was a Corporal in the 5th Dragoon Guards and lived in the local barracks with her mother Mary (nee Gilbin). John was born in Maldon, Essex where his father was stationed. Probably his family were Irish but this remains to be proved. Mary was Irish and Catholic and the couple were married 11 April 1834 at St. Paul's Church, Dublin while the Dragoons were stationed there.
Martin and Sarah did not stay in Eston but moved to Rosedale, high on the North Yorkshire Moors and at the other end of the Cleveland iron ore steam. Little is left of Rosedale now except some desolate ruined brickwork. I have identified 8 children of Martin and Sarah, 3 of whom died in childhood. They were:

Note that Mary, 2 months old on the 1871 census, is not with the family on the 1881 census. So far as I understand it, Martin and Sarah moved to Annfield Plain when he was offered a job there.
My director ancestor in this family is William John [Rowland].
