As I indicated on the Main Page, the pages are hand-knitted and there are some things which are becoming ubiquitous elsewhere which are not here - principally things which require plug-ins such as Flash or multi-media add ons which eat up loads of bandwidth and are very rarely as clever or amusing as their creators imagine. I suppose some of this is just contrariness, and in part because these things annoy me when I'm browsing and don't see any reason to inflict them on friends here. Mostly though it is because I don't like them on principle. My intent is that these pages should be viewable through any browser without any hassle and without extended download times. Even the hand-coding has an element of principle about it: I made a copy of the draft of these pages and started to edit them using MSWord - until I saw the horrific quantity of junk code which was automatically inserted into something which is relatively simple and clean to do. It just struck me as the kind of profligate waste which annoys me about our culture in general. It doesn't have to be that way, so why acquiesce in it? (Yes, I know there are plenty of free HTML editors around which can clean things up, but it just struck me as more fun - more self sufficient as well - to do it myself). That's not to say of course that as time goes on I won't add stuff if it interests me and if it can be done in a way that retains the principle of hassle-free accessibility. The challenge, of course, is to try and keep it simple without boring you to death in the process. As I've said elsewhere, let me know what you think. |
